What should you look for in tummy control swimwear?

If you're looking for a swimsuit with good tummy support, there are a few features worth knowing about.

Power mesh and supportive lining

Power mesh or a supportive inner lining can provide additional structure through the front of a swimsuit.

The important thing is how it feels when it's on. You want support without feeling as though you can't move comfortably.

Ruching through the tummy

Ruching is a popular feature in tummy control swimwear because it adds texture and softness through the front of the swimsuit.

It can be a particularly good option if you want some shaping without the look or feel of a very structured swimsuit.

Structured fabrics and shaping panels

Some swimsuits use firmer fabrics or strategically placed panels to provide support through particular areas.

Different styles offer different levels of control, so don't assume the firmest swimsuit will automatically be the best choice for you.

High-waisted bikini bottoms

If you prefer a two-piece, a high-waisted bikini bottom can provide additional coverage and support through the tummy.

Look at where the waistband actually sits on your body and make sure it feels secure and comfortable rather than digging in.

Don't go down a size for more tummy control

This is an important one.

Choosing a smaller swimsuit isn't the answer to getting more support.

A swimsuit that's too small can pull through the straps and leg line, feel uncomfortable through the body and affect how the bust fits.

Swimwear sizing also varies between brands, so try not to get too attached to the number on the label.

Choose the size that fits properly and let the construction of the swimsuit provide the support.

What about bust support?

Tummy control is only one part of finding the right swimsuit.

If you also need fuller-bust support, look at the cup construction, straps, neckline and fit through the body.

Depending on what feels best for you, this might mean underwire, more structured cups, adjustable or wider straps, or simply a different shape.

A swimsuit needs to work as a whole.

What if you want more tummy coverage?

If coverage is important to you, look beyond whether a swimsuit is labelled “tummy control”.

Consider the neckline, leg line and overall cut as well as the amount of coverage through the front.

For two-pieces, a higher-waisted bottom may give you the coverage you're looking for. For one-pieces, different cuts and constructions can feel completely different even when they're technically the same size.

How should tummy control swimwear feel?

Supportive, but comfortable.

When trying on a swimsuit, don't just stand still in front of the mirror.

Raise your arms. Sit down. Bend. Walk around.

Check that the straps stay comfortable, the bust remains secure and the swimsuit stays where you want it without constant adjusting.
